On Interdependence

INTERDEPENDENCE | 7.3.23

Last year at this time, I wrote to you about independence… So, I decided that I’d consider interdependence this year…

Interdependence is when two (or more) humans rely on each other (in a way that is not co-dependent). It is a necessary and healthy part of our physical, mental, and emotional development.

Often folks come to me interested in forming new relationships, or to work on their existing relationships… and this almost always leads to work on their relationship with themselves. This is necessary work. If we have a problematic relationship with ourselves, it will impact our familial relationships, our friendships, and our romantic relationships.

BUT, I often I hear people say:

Work on yourself first.

This isn’t wrong, but it could be a mistake. Because, the thing is, you don’t need to wait. You can and should (always) be working on your relationship with yourself, but:

You can also be doing this work while you are in relationship with others.

True ✨MAGIC✨ happens when we don’t forget our own needs in our relationship, we do work on ourselves, and we have a partner that helps us move forward in this work.

[Do this right now: If your partner is engaged in working on their childhood wounds, forgiving themselves, and giving you grace as you learn and grow, please thank them! Hug them. 💋 Kiss them. Acknowledge them. They are giving you a priceless gift.]

Intimacy and relationship building teach us so much about ourselves. We need our inner circle folx to reflect back to us. We don't just innately know how to love. We aren’t born knowing how to build healthy, reciprocal relationships. We have to learn together.

Relationship gives us the opportunity to become better. I help my clients visualize their ideal outcomes* — often with regard to their relationships. I teach them all kinds of skills and encourage them to practice. Very often the practice grounds are with their partner! We need guidance, practice, and companionship.
